The book is a morality tale about what can happen when a budding feminist goes bad and becomes dependent on marriage and a man. She has a story to tell as old as men and women and new as the online internet sites where married people betray each other so easily, even old married men and women. Make that men. The heroine is a funny, charming woman, although she is about as low and clueless as a woman can get without being battered and pennlless. Once betrayed, she feels like an animal thrown out of its home. She grows. Her growth is painfully slow and maddening to friends who can’t understand her unreasonable grief, but she will make them and you understand. This book is a must read for students of psychology and people even considering divorce. It is very definitely a classic case of- um, something. It certainly may be studied for decades to come. It is seminal. The first person style of the book is intimate, the language conversational, reflecting the excitability of the main character, as bizarre after bizarre incident happens to her. It is filled with literary and classic movie allusions and jokes. It has a lot of good lines and some fair scenes- you know, like in JULIIUS CAESAR- just not in poetry. It is lots of fun. I hope it makes a large number of readers laugh and cry as it did its author. Fiction, of course.

It had seemed almost like someone yelling, and Anna was caught off-guard, instantly surprised and unsure what to do. She quickly crossed the bedroom once more, and as if in some bizarre parody of a spy movie, glanced around the doorframe, unsure of what she thought she’d see. An open area that was centered above the staircase dominated the second floor. On either side of this void was a landing that led to a foyer at the far end, wide windows once again looking out upon the property in what was the central and elegant theme of the house. Equidistantly spaced along each landing was a series of doors that Anna assumed led to various guest rooms. Gingerly, she stepped out on the landing, making her way to the foyer at the far end, still unsure of herself. She was just beginning to contemplate going back downstairs to rejoin Josh at the party, when she heard the sound once again. Excerpt: Leslie William Nielsen, OC (born February 11, 1926) is a Canadian actor and comedian. Although Nielsen’s acting career crosses a variety of genres in both television and films, he has achieved his greatest film successes as Commander John J. Adams in the film Forbidden Planet, and also in comic movies, including Airplane! and The Naked Gun series. His portrayal of serious characters seemingly oblivious of (and complicit in) their absurd surroundings gives Nielsen a reputation as a comedian. Leading roles in the science fiction classic Forbidden Planet and as the ship’s captain in The Poseidon Adventure came long before Nielsen considered a turn to comedy. His deadpan delivery as a doctor in 1980′s Airplane! marked a turning point in Nielsen’s career, one that would make him, in the words of film critic Roger Ebert, “the Olivier of spoofs.” He may be best known for his roles as Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun, Dr. Rumack in Airplane, as well as President Harris in the Scary Movie series. Nielsen has appeared in over 100 films and 1,500 television programs over the span of his career, portraying over 220 characters. Nielsen’s uncle Jean Hersholt (pictured here in the 1936 film His Brother’s Wife) inspired him to become an actor. Nielsen was born on February 11, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan, to Ingvard and Maybelle Nielsen. His father was Danish, and his mother was Welsh. Nielsen had two brothers, his older brother, Erik Nielsen (19242008), was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada during the 1980s. Their uncle Jean Hersholt was a prominent silent-film actor best known for his portrayal of Dr. Christian in the long-running radio series of the same name and the subsequent television series and films. Excerpt: Searching for Jerry Garcia is the second and final studio album by Detroit rapper Proof of D12, released on August 9, 2005. It was the only solo album that Proof released on a major label before his death. It reached number sixty-five on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums Chart. The album is named after Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia. The album’s release date, August 9, 2005, intentionally coincided with the ten-year anniversary of Garcia’s death. Proof used the title of this album and the original song titles (“Jump Biatch” was originally “Eric Clapton Jr.”) to refer to famous deaths that people are uncertain about. He extends this concept to express suicidal thoughts of his own on the track “Kurt Kobain”. In a Rolling Stone Magazine article, Proof explained the album’s title: While recording his solo debut, D12 rapper Proof found inspiration in an unlikely person the late jam rocker Jerry Garcia: “I was watching Searching for Bobby Fisher and Mark Hicks (D12′s manager) put in a Jerry Garcia documentary,” says Proof, who also serves as Eminem’s right-hand rapper. “In this movie, he talked about never doing the same show twice. I did that to D12 sets overseas. Plus, he didn’t care about record sales he just wanted to make fans happy.” In a nod to their similarities, Proof, born DeShaun Holton, named his debut Searching for Jerry Garcia. The album was released August 9, 2005, the tenth anniversary of Garcia’s death, on Proof’s independent label, Iron Fist Records. “I called his estate, and I couldn’t believe they gave me permission! ” says the rapper. “They didn’t ask for money. So I’m like a disciple, preaching the gospel of Jerry Garcia. The dude is phenomenal.” Besides Garcia, Proof also gives a shout-out to Nirvana’s late frontman in Search. More:

Excerpt: The Green Berets is a 1968 film featuring John Wayne, George Takei, David Janssen, Jim Hutton and Aldo Ray, nominally based on the eponymous 1965 book by Robin Moore, though the screenplay has little relation to the book. Unlike most war films, the movie polarized public opinion to this day. Thematically, The Green Berets is strongly anti-communist and pro-Saigon. It was produced in 1968, at the height of American involvement in the Vietnam War, the same year as the Tet offensive against the largest cities in South Vietnam. John Wayne was prompted by the anti-war atmosphere and social discontent in the U.S. to make this film in countering that. He requested and obtained full military co-operation and materiel from President Johnson. Columbia Pictures, (who had bought the book’s pre-publication film rights) was not able to produce a script that was approved by the Army whilst producer David L. Wolper, who also tried to buy the same rights, could not obtain finance for filming. John Wayne had always been a steadfast supporter of American involvement in the war in Vietnam. He had entertained the soldiers in Vietnam, and wanted The Green Berets to be a tribute to them. He co-directed the film, and turned down the “Major Reisman” role in The Dirty Dozen to do so. The film’s first scene illustrates that contention when Green Beret tour guides at Fort Benning, Georgia, show civilian visitors to the U.S. Infantry School the Soviet- and Chinese-made weapons issued to the soldiers and guerillas of the communist NVA and VC. The film grossed $11 million dollars. At Fort Bragg, newspaper reporter George Beckworth (David Janssen) is at a Special Forces briefing about the American military involvement in the war in Vietnam. Excerpt: The Truman Show is a 1998 American comedy-drama film directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Niccol. The cast includes Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, as well as Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Ed Harris and Natascha McElhone. The film chronicles the life of a man who discovers he is living in a constructed reality soap opera, televised 24/7 to billions across the globe. The genesis of The Truman Show was a spec script by Niccol. The original draft was more in tone of a science fiction thriller, with the story set in New York City. Scott Rudin purchased the script, and instantly set the project up at Paramount Pictures. Brian de Palma was in contention to direct before Weir took over, managing to make the film for $60 million against the estimated $80 million budget. Niccol rewrote the script simultaneously as the filmmakers were waiting for Carrey’s schedule to open up for filming. The majority of filming took place at Seaside, Florida, a master-planned community located in the Florida Panhandle. The film was a financial and critical success, and earned numerous nominations at the 71st Academy Awards, 56th Golden Globe Awards, 52nd British Academy Film Awards and The Saturn Awards. The Truman Show has been analyzed as a thesis on Christianity, simulated reality, existentialism and the forthcoming rise of reality television. The movie is framed around the television show “The Truman Show.” Its main character, Truman Burbank, has lived his entire life since before birth in front of cameras for the show, though he hi.
